I just got back from Louisville, KY with Corbin Faber where we attended the ACPA Convention. What an amazing experience: from the top down, ACPA really has a firm grasp on things.
Were you one of the 250+ SCVNGR players at ACPA? If not, let me fill you in on what we did. We built a SCVNGR trek that took attendees throughout the exhibit hall, asking exhibitors questions or even taking photographs along the way.
We also built a game that guided attendees thr...

La Roche College may be a small school in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, but our students have dreams that far exceed the size of the school we hope they'll attend. For many of them, the road to success starts with a visit to one of our open house events. This is where they decide if La Roche is the right place to experience the next four years of their lives. As a school we want to make a great first impression, and SCVNGR is one of the tools we use to do so.

Two years ago, I was a senior at Princeton University trading time writing my senior thesis, getting through classes, soaking up the last rays of sunshine with my friends, and looking for a job. I was an English major and my thesis was a set of short stories done through the Creative Writing department. Needless to say, I did not envision that I would be working in the tech industry.
Indeed, I had convinced myself by then that my true dream...

With the surprising news over the weekend that Facebook had acquired the Austin-based geosocial giant Gowalla, a lot of people have been asking me all sorts of different questions. These questions range from the most basic - i.e., "Why did Facebook acquire Gowalla?" to the more practical, like, "What does this imply for higher education?" I thought I would take a stab at both.
First, let's go back in time. Gowalla was, at one point, a sexy name in the start-up/tech in...

At last year's TABS conference in Baltimore, I was lucky enough to win an iPad as a prize in a competition sponsored by SCVNGR. I'll admit that would have tried and used the cool iPhone app anyway, so the iPad was a great bonus. When my Director of Admissions (I work at a boarding school in New England) found out that I was going to TABS and that SCVNGR was going to be one of the vendors at the trade show, she asked me to ...

Each year, like many other Admissions offices, we host a number of on-campus events. We decided that putting a unique twist on the average campus tour, might work in our favor.
Our first attempt at using SCVNGR was during our Spring Senior Day event. We held two different ones during the month of March and played slightly differently each time. During the first Spring Senior Day eve...

I am really looking forward to attending the Higher Ed Web Conference in Austin, TX October 23-26. It will be my first time, and from what I hear, it is a great group of people.
But what I am most looking forward to is the opportunity to give a presentation called "Geo-Social Nonsense: The Future of Location-Based Services and their Role in Mobile."
A lot of schools have delved into the murky realm of geo-social head first. But I worry that a lot of the re...
